If a VPN app is blocked on your work laptop, banned in your country, or just not something you want to pay for, you still have real options for how to hide your IP address without a VPN. Which one is right depends on what your threat model actually is. The strongest of them, the Tor network, doesn’t cost anything and is built specifically for this job. The weakest, a random free web proxy, can do more harm than good. Here’s what actually works, what it costs you in speed or trust, and where each one falls short.
Use the Tor Browser
Tor routes your traffic through at least three volunteer-run relays, encrypting it in layers so no single relay knows both who you are and what site you’re visiting. The website you land on only ever sees the IP address of the exit relay, never your own. This is the same tool the Electronic Frontier Foundation recommends in its Surveillance Self-Defense guide for people who need to hide their browsing from local network observers and from the sites they visit (EFF).
Two caveats matter. First, EFF is explicit that “only activities you do inside of Tor Browser itself will be anonymized” — other apps on the same device, and any account you log into through Tor, aren’t covered. Second, speed takes a real hit, and some sites throw extra CAPTCHAs at exit-node traffic because so much abuse also travels through Tor. For day-to-day browsing where you specifically want your IP hidden from the sites you visit, it’s the closest free option to the real thing. Turn on iCloud Private Relay (Apple devices only)
If you’re on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac with an active iCloud+ subscription, Private Relay is a built-in alternative that doesn’t require installing anything. Apple’s own description: your request goes through two separate relays, one operated by Apple that sees your real IP but not your destination, and a second one run by a third-party partner that assigns you a temporary IP and can see the destination but not who you are. Apple frames it as a system where “no single entity — not even Apple — can see both who you are and what sites you’re visiting” (Apple Support).
The catch: it only protects Safari traffic and some system-level requests, not every app on your device, it’s tied to a paid iCloud+ plan, and it isn’t available in every country or with every network configuration. It’s a solid, low-effort layer for a Safari-heavy iPhone user, not a general-purpose IP mask for the whole device.
Route traffic through an SSH tunnel
If you have shell access to any remote server, even a $5-a-month VPS, you can turn it into a personal SOCKS proxy with one command:
ssh -D 1080 -N youruser@your-server-ip
Point your browser’s SOCKS5 proxy setting at 127.0.0.1:1080 and your traffic exits from the server’s IP instead of your own. This is functionally similar to a VPN’s core job, minus the polished app, and it’s a method security professionals have used for years to tunnel around restrictive networks. The tradeoff is setup complexity (you need a server and basic command-line comfort) and the fact that only apps you configure to use the SOCKS proxy are covered, not your whole device.
Switch networks or use mobile data
The blunt-force option: your IP address is assigned by whatever network you’re connected to, so changing networks changes your visible IP. Moving from home Wi-Fi to a coffee shop’s public network, or switching your phone to cellular data, gives you a different, less personally-tied IP address on the spot. Many mobile carriers also use carrier-grade NAT, meaning thousands of customers share the same public IP at any given moment, which adds a layer of crowd anonymity that a home connection doesn’t have.
This doesn’t encrypt anything and doesn’t hide your traffic from the new network’s operator (coffee shop Wi-Fi is notoriously easy to snoop on), so treat it as an IP-rotation trick, not a privacy tool on its own.
Skip the free public proxy list
Free web proxies show up at the top of every “hide your IP” search result, and they’re the option to be most careful with. A 2024 longitudinal study presented at NDSS’s MADWeb workshop tracked more than 640,000 free proxies across 30 months and found the ecosystem riddled with problems: 4,452 known vulnerabilities across the proxy IPs tested, including 1,755 that allowed remote code execution, and nearly 17,000 proxies caught actively modifying the content passing through them (Mehanna et al., arXiv). Only a small fraction of the proxies tested supported HTTPS at all, meaning unencrypted logins and form data pass through the proxy operator’s servers in plain text.
The researchers’ bottom line applies directly here: someone runs those “free” proxy servers, and if you’re not paying, your traffic is often the product. If you need a proxy specifically, a paid one from a provider with a published privacy policy is a materially different risk profile than an anonymous list pulled from a search result.
Which one actually fits your situation
For hiding your IP from the sites you visit and from anyone watching your local network, Tor Browser is the strongest no-cost option and the one privacy researchers actually recommend. If you’re comfortable with a terminal and already rent a server, an SSH SOCKS tunnel gives you VPN-like routing without a VPN subscription. Switching networks is fine for a one-off IP change but isn’t a privacy tool by itself. Free public proxies are the one option on this list that can actively work against you.
None of these substitute for good account hygiene elsewhere; sites you’re logged into can still identify you no matter what hides your IP address.
